Arguably the holy grail of architectural foliage for the true exotic and Araliaceae fanatic. Native to the damp, shaded mountain slopes and subtropical river valleys of the Eastern Himalayas and Southeast Asia, Trevesia palmata produces some of the most bizarre, intricate, and mesmerising leaves in the botanical kingdom.

The immense leaves look as though they have been precision-cut into living snowflakes. Each deeply incised, paddle-tipped lobe radiates outwards from a solid central disc, held aloft on stout, bristly petioles. New growth unfurls coated in a soft, pale cinnamon felt, slowly expanding into dramatic, glossy umbrellas up to 60 cm across. As it matures, it develops an upright, palm-like single stem lightly armed with short prickles, adding to its distinct prehistoric silhouette.

Every single one of our Trevesia palmata has been hand-raised from seed right here in our nursery. By growing them on from seed ourselves rather than using mass-produced tissue culture or imported stock, these plants develop exceptionally robust root systems and natural vigour, perfectly acclimated to UK nursery life from day one.

• Hardiness: Tender to cool-temperate. Best kept frost-free (ideally 5°C+ through winter, though established plants will tolerate brief dips toward freezing if kept drier at the root). Outstanding as a container specimen to stage outdoors in a sheltered jungle border from late spring through autumn, before moving into a conservatory, bright room, or frost-free glasshouse for winter.

• Position: Dappled shade, light woodland understorey, or bright indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct midday summer sun, which can scorch the intricate leaf margins. High wind shelter is essential to keep the large, architecturally delicate leaves from tearing.

• Moisture & Feeding: Water thoroughly during the peak growing months, letting the surface dry slightly between soakings. Ease off water substantially through the winter chill to protect dormant roots. Feed monthly from spring to late summer with a balanced organic liquid seaweed feed.

• Soil: Coarse, fertile, and exceptionally free-draining. A mix rich in coarse bark, perlite, and pumice blended into an open, peat-free compost gives roots the aeration and moisture retention they crave.
