Jungle in a Box
Pteris nipponica
Pteris nipponica
Light up the darkest, sheltered corners of your jungle garden with striking silver variegation.
If you want to move away from standard green ferns and introduce serious light, contrast, and structure to your understory planting, Pteris nipponica is an absolute gem. Commonly known as the Japanese Brake Fern, this highly decorative, evergreen to semi-evergreen species brings a refined, frosty elegance that beautifully disrupts dense green tropical foliage.
Native to the woodlands of Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, it features a distinct, eye-catching growth habit where the lower, fertile fronds stay compact and ground-hugging, while the taller, slender sterile fronds arch elegantly skyward.
Why We Love It:
-
Graphic Silver Variegation: Each lance-shaped leaflet features a broad, luminous silver-white band running straight down the centre, framed by a crisp, deep-green margin. It acts like a natural mirror, catching ambient light in dim, shady corners.
-
Dual-Action Architecture: The plant produces two distinct types of fronds. The shorter, broader fronds form a lush, dense carpet at the base, while the slender, elongated fronds rise up to create a delicate, airy canopy.
-
The Ultimate Understory Partner: It provides a spectacular texture and colour contrast when tucked beneath large, broad-leaved exotics like Fatsia, Tetrapanax, or tree ferns (Dicksonia antarctica).
Growth & Care:
-
Position: Dappled to deep shade. Protect it from direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the beautiful variegated margins. Perfect for a sheltered, damp woodland border, a shady courtyard, or a cool conservatory.
-
Soil: Moist, rich, humus-rich, and well-drained. It thrives in soils that mimic a forest floor—consistently damp but never waterlogged.
-
Size: A neat, well-behaved grower reaching an ultimate height of around 40cm with a similar spread.
-
Hardiness: Borderline hardy / Half-hardy (generally rated down to -5C. In mild, sheltered UK microclimates—especially in the south and southwest or in urban coastal gardens—it can remain fully evergreen outdoors year-round. In colder regions, grow it in a pot to easily lift into a frost-free greenhouse or porch for winter, or plant it close to a sheltered wall with a protective winter mulch over the crown.
Size & Presentation:
Supplied in a chunky, well-established 3-Litre container. These are strong, mature specimens with dense crown structures and extensive root systems, ready to bring immediate light and architectural contrast to your shade borders or container displays
