For striking, architectural evergreen foliage, it is hard to beat Pseudopanax 'Moa's Toes'. Native to New Zealand, this incredibly tough shrub earns its unusual name from its thick, leathery, deep-cut leaves that genuinely resemble the giant three-toed footprint of the extinct Moa bird.

The foliage provides incredible year-round structural interest. New growth emerges a dark, glossy purple-black before slowly maturing to a rich, dark bronze-green. Its distinctly prehistoric, prehistoric look makes it an outstanding structural backdrop for a UK jungle garden or a brilliant standalone specimen in a modern, minimalist planting scheme.

Growing & Overwintering Unlike many exotic-looking plants, Pseudopanax is fantastically resilient. It is highly tolerant of wind and salt spray, making it an exceptional choice for exposed or coastal gardens.

It is low-maintenance and naturally forms an upright, bushy habit without the need for pruning. To get the darkest, most intense foliage coloration, position it in full sun. While it is hardy through most typical UK winters, like many New Zealand natives, it hates sitting in cold, waterlogged winter soil. Ensuring sharp drainage is the key to keeping it happy year-round.

Quick Care Guide

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages the deepest purple-black coloration in the leaves.

  • Water: Water moderately during the summer. Drought-tolerant once established, but requires excellent drainage, especially in winter.

  • Soil: Tolerates a wide range of soils (chalk, loam, sand) provided it is well-drained.

  • Feeding: Low-maintenance. A light application of a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring is sufficient.

  • Hardiness: Hardy (H4). Can typically withstand temperatures down to -8°C to -10°C in well-drained soil.
