A Towering, Fragrant Architectural Giant for the Exotic Border

If you want to push the boundaries of scale in your tropical garden, Hedychium stenopetalum is an absolute titan. Commonly known as the Giant White Ginger Lily, this spectacular Himalayan and Southeast Asian native is one of the largest Hedychium species in cultivation. It is prized by exotic growers for its towering, banana-like foliage and magnificent, intensely fragrant late-summer blooms.

Supplied as an established plant in a solid 2-litre pot, this ginger has developed a strong, healthy rhizome base. It is ready to be planted out or potted on, where it will rapidly throw up thick, cane-like stems to create an instant jungle canopy.

Key Features:

  • Massive Proportions: This is a true giant. When established, well-fed, and given a long growing season, the stems can reach an incredible 3 metres (10 feet) or more in height, topped with huge, paddle-shaped tropical leaves.

  • Spectacular Blooms: In late summer and early autumn (August to October), it produces enormous terminal flower spikes covered in delicate, pure white flowers with incredibly slender, spider-like petals.

  • Intense Fragrance: The flowers emit a rich, sweet, and highly exotic perfume that becomes especially potent in the warm evening air—perfect for planting near a patio or seating area.

  • Architectural Impact: Provides the structural impact of a banana plant combined with the floral display of an orchid, making it an unrivaled focal point for the back of an exotic border.

Care & Cultivation in the UK:

Like most giant gingers, this plant is incredibly hungry and thirsty during the summer, but requires proper management over the damp UK winter.

  • Light Requirements: Plant in full sun or light, dappled shade. In the UK, giving it plenty of direct sunlight is often the key to encouraging a strong late-summer floral display.

  • Watering & Feeding: To achieve massive growth, it needs rich, moisture-retentive soil. Water copiously during the summer months and feed heavily with a high-potash liquid fertiliser (like tomato feed) once the flower spikes begin to form.

  • Hardiness & Winter Care: This is a deciduous perennial, meaning the stems will naturally die back after the first frosts. It is root-hardy in milder coastal areas if the rhizomes are protected with a very thick, dry winter mulch (like straw or composted bark). In colder inland parts of the UK, it is safer to grow it in a large container and move it to a frost-free glasshouse or shed for winter, keeping the compost almost completely dry until spring.

Supplied as: 1 x established plant with a strong rhizome base in a 2-litre nursery pot, ready to unleash massive tropical growth this summer.
