A Cascading, Bamboo-Like Grass for the Woodland Understory

Every great exotic garden needs a lush, textural understory to contrast with the towering tree ferns and giant broad-leaved tropicals. Hakonechloa macra 'Albostriata' is arguably the finest ornamental grass for this exact job. Native to the damp, rocky cliffs of Japan, this elegant, low-growing perennial forms a sweeping, waterfall-like mound of foliage that brings instant movement and light to the shadier spots in your garden.

Currently established in 9cm pots, these are an excellent starter size. They are fully rooted and ready to be potted on to size up quickly, or planted directly out in clusters to begin forming a sweeping, dramatic ground cover beneath your taller exotics.

Key Features:

  • Striking Variegation: Features wide, bamboo-like green leaves heavily striped with clean, crisp white lines. The bright variegation acts like a spotlight, illuminating dark corners beneath tree canopies.

  • Dynamic Movement: The arching, cascading habit catches the slightest breeze, adding beautiful kinetic movement and a soft, rustling sound to the jungle garden.

  • Exceptional Vigor: Unlike the classic yellow 'Aureola' variety, 'Albostriata' contains more chlorophyll, making it significantly faster-growing, more robust, and more tolerant of sun.

  • Autumn Color: As temperatures drop in late autumn, the foliage often takes on subtle, attractive pink and purplish hues before gracefully dying back for winter.

Care & Cultivation in the UK:

This is an incredibly tough, fully hardy, and low-maintenance grass once established in the right spot.

  • Light Requirements: Performs best in partial, dappled shade. It can tolerate more direct sun than other Hakonechloa varieties provided the soil does not dry out, but the foliage looks its absolute best when grown under the canopy of larger plants.

  • Watering & Soil: Thrives in rich, consistently moist, and well-draining soil. Dig in plenty of organic matter (like compost or leaf mould) before planting to help retain moisture during the summer months.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy (RHS H7) anywhere in the UK. It will easily survive the harshest winters without any special protection.

  • Maintenance: This is a deciduous herbaceous perennial, meaning the foliage will turn brown and die back over winter. Leave the dead foliage in place to protect the crown from winter wet, and simply cut the whole clump back to ground level in late February or early March before the fresh new shoots emerge.

Supplied as: 1 x young, established plant in a 9cm nursery pot, ready to be potted on or planted out to bring instant light and movement to your shaded borders.
