Quick Care Guide
-
Position: Prefers dappled shade to full shade. Protect from harsh, midday direct sunlight to prevent frond scorch.
-
Soil: Thrives in a rich, humus-dense, moisture-retentive but free-draining acidic or neutral soil mix.
-
Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist, particularly during the active spring and summer growing seasons. For the tree ferns (Cyathea), ensure you water the crowns and trunks as well as the roots once they begin to develop height.
-
Hardiness: The Cyrtomium varieties are fully hardy across most of the UK. The Cyathea and Blechnum species will require winter protection from severe frosts—ideally overwintered in a frost-free greenhouse, conservatory, or wrapped securely in situated microclimates.
