Farfugium japonicum var. giganteum (formerly Ligularia tussilaginea) is one of the most magnificent architectural shade plants available for the exotic garden. Rather than the spotted foliage of its cousins, giganteum is celebrated for sheer scale: producing massive, leathery, rounded leaves that can span over 30–45 cm across. Each kidney-shaped leaf carries an intense, deep green polish that looks buffed to a mirror finish. In late autumn and early winter, mature plants send up cheerful sprays of bright yellow, daisy-like flowers on sturdy stems.

Starting with an autumn plug lets you establish this architectural beast months ahead of time. Pot it up now, let it settle on a cool indoor windowsill or under unheated glass over winter, and plant it out in spring with a dense root network ready to throw massive foliage from late spring onwards.

Why Start with a Winter Plug?

  • Spring Head Start: Farfugium grows steadily in cool conditions. Overwintering a plug indoors or under glass gives you a strong, established crown primed to send up giant leaves as soon as the garden warms up.

  • Winter Architectural Interest: Robust, evergreen, glossy foliage that stays clean, green, and sculptural through the coldest months of the year.

  • Exceptional Value: Established 2L–3L specimens of giganteum are difficult to find and command top-tier nursery prices. Growing from a plug delivers premium architectural drama at entry-level cost.

Plant Details & Sizing

  • Format: Well-rooted young plug plant

  • Type: Hardy evergreen architectural perennial

  • Eventual Garden Height: 60cm – 90cm (taller in flower)

  • Eventual Spread: 75cm – 1m

  • Foliage: Massive, kidney-shaped to rounded, thick leathery leaves with a deep, glossy emerald sheen

  • Flowers: Clusters of bright yellow daisy-like blooms held above the foliage in late autumn/early winter

  • Hardiness: Hardy down to approximately -8°C to -10°C (RHS H4/H5) once established; reliably evergreen in mild gardens or sheltered spots.

Winter Care & Growing-On Guide

  • Potting Up: Upon arrival, pot your plug into a 9cm or 1-litre pot using a rich, moisture-retentive but free-draining compost (peat-free multi-purpose blended with coarse perlite or grit).

  • Light & Position: Thrives on a cool, bright windowsill indoors, or in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. While tough, young plugs benefit from being kept sheltered from prolonged hard freezes in their first winter.

  • Watering: Keep the compost evenly, lightly moist. Farfugium dislikes drying out completely, but during winter dull spells, ensure the pot is never sitting in soggy, standing water.

  • Spring Planting: In April or May, plant out into a moisture-retentive, humus-rich border or a generous decorative container. Position in partial shade to dappled shade, protected from harsh, drying midday winds to keep those huge leaves flawless and glossy all season.
