Cyathea nova-caledoniae – New Caledonian Tree Fern
Cyathea nova-caledoniae, also known as Sphaeropteris novae-caledoniae, is a striking and uncommon species native to the lush forests of New Caledonia. It is rarely seen in cultivation and highly sought after by collectors for its distinctive appearance and limited natural range. In the wild, it grows in humid, sheltered valleys where the air remains moist year-round.
This elegant tree fern can reach 8 to 10 metres in height, forming a slender trunk topped with a full crown of arching fronds. The stipes are cloaked in attractive, rusty-brown scales, providing a warm contrast to the vibrant green fronds. Its compact form and richly textured trunk make it an excellent choice for tropical-style gardens or as a specimen plant in a sheltered courtyard or greenhouse.
In the UK, Cyathea nova-caledoniae is very tender and must be protected from frost. It will not tolerate freezing temperatures and should be overwintered indoors or in a heated greenhouse, ideally kept above 5°C throughout the colder months.
Care:
Grow in a rich, moisture-retentive soil with plenty of organic matter. Keep the crown and root zone consistently moist, watering directly into the crown during the growing season. Provide partial shade with protection from strong winds to prevent frond damage. During winter, container-grown plants should be moved under cover, while outdoor specimens must be carefully wrapped with fleece and mulched heavily to protect the crown and roots.
