A Striking, Fast-Growing, and Highly Sought-After Exotic

If you are looking for one of the most visually stunning tree ferns available, Cyathea medullaris (now officially classified as Sphaeropteris medullaris) is an absolute showstopper. Native to New Zealand and commonly known as the Black Tree Fern, this rare and highly sought-after species is famous for its dramatic, dark aesthetics and incredibly fast growth rate.

Currently established in 12cm pots, these young ferns are an excellent starter size. They are perfectly primed for you to pot on, keep moist, and watch explode into impressive, large specimens over the coming seasons.

Key Features:

  • Dramatic Dark Aesthetics: Famous for its stunning, distinctive black main trunk and dark-ribbed fronds. The signature black coloration will deepen and become much more pronounced as the plant matures.

  • Massive Canopy: In maturity, this spectacular fern is capable of producing huge, sweeping fronds that can reach up to 5 metres in length.

  • Rapid Growth: Known as an exceptionally fast-growing tree fern. If you consistently pot it on to accommodate the roots, it will reward you by sizing up incredibly quickly.

  • Architectural Impact: Unrivaled in its ability to bring a striking, prehistoric, and genuinely tropical feel to any garden or collection.

Care & Cultivation in the UK:

As a fast-growing fern from New Zealand, it requires plenty of moisture and dedicated winter care in the UK.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Never allow the compost in these 12cm pots to completely dry out, as uninterrupted moisture is the secret to fueling its rapid growth rate.

  • Potting On: Because of its fast growth, do not let it become root-bound. Step it up into larger pots progressively to keep the momentum going.

  • Hardiness & Winter Protection: This is a tender species and is not as cold-hardy as the common Dicksonia antarctica. It must be kept strictly frost-free. We highly recommend growing this in a container so it can be moved into a glasshouse, conservatory, or frost-free polytunnel from late October to March.

Supplied as: 1 x established young plant in a 12cm nursery pot, ready to be potted on and pushed for rapid summer growth.
