Cyathea lunulata – Pacific Tree Fern
Cyathea lunulata, also known as Sphaeropteris lunulata, is a spectacular tree fern native to several Pacific islands, including Fiji, the Solomon Islands, the Marianas, and the Bismarck Archipelago. In its natural habitat, it can reach an incredible 20 metres, although cultivated specimens are more commonly seen around 10 to 12 metres tall.

This beautiful species is instantly recognisable by the soft beige scales covering its trunk and the striking petioles, which range from olive green to dark purple or almost black. These contrasting colours run lengthwise, giving the plant a distinctive and dramatic appearance. Its lush, arching fronds create a canopy that brings a true rainforest feel to any exotic garden.

In the UK, Cyathea lunulata is very tender and must be protected from frost. It is best grown in a conservatory, greenhouse, or very sheltered courtyard garden where winter temperatures stay above 5°C.

Care:
Plant in a rich, moisture-retentive soil with plenty of organic matter. Keep both the crown and roots consistently moist, watering directly into the crown during the growing season. Provide dappled shade and protection from strong winds to preserve the fronds. During the winter months, protect the crown with fleece and maintain a humid environment if grown under cover.

Please note, these are big ferns! We endevour to fit them in the boxes undamaged but we may have to trim or bend the odd frond! This will not effect your tree fern!
