Cyathea lepifera (syn. Sphaeropteris lepifera) – Flying Spider-monkey Tree Fern

One of the most breathlessly fast-growing and architectural tree ferns on the planet. Hailing from the lush cloud forests and subtropical slopes of Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands, and the Philippines, Cyathea lepifera is legendary for its massive, feathery crowns and striking, almost prehistoric trunk.

As old fronds naturally shed, they leave behind clean, coin-shaped scars patterned across the slender trunk, while the massive new croziers emerge heavily clad in gleaming golden-blonde scales. In active growth with abundant moisture, it forms an umbrella-like canopy of vibrant apple-green fronds at a speed that puts most other tree ferns to shame. An exceptional centerpiece for serious exotic collectors, sheltered coastal gardens, or as a magnificent container specimen brought under glass for winter.

• Hardiness: Tender / Semi-hardy. Will tolerate a very brief light nip (around 0°C to -1°C), but fronds scorch quickly. Best grown in a pot moved into a frost-free conservatory/greenhouse over winter, or planted out in ultra-sheltered, virtually frost-free coastal microclimates with trunk and crown fleece protection.

• Position: Dappled woodland shade to bright, indirect light. Sheltered spot is essential—the fast-growing fronds are brittle in coastal gales.

• Moisture & Feeding: Demands consistent moisture and high humidity. Water the crown and fibrous trunk daily during warm summer spells, and feed regularly with a dilute organic seaweed tonic during peak growth.

• Soil: Open, coarse, organic-rich, and free-draining woodland mix (leaf mould, coarse bark, and peat alternative). Must never be allowed to bake dry.
