Cyathea felina
Cyathea felina, also known as Sphaeropteris felina, is a rare and highly prized tree fern native to New Guinea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and parts of northern Australia, where it is listed as endangered in Queensland. Found in humid coastal forests and shaded woodland, it naturally thrives in sheltered, moist environments but can also tolerate periods of direct sun once well established.
This distinctive species can reach over 8 metres in height with a trunk up to 30 cm in diameter. Its bold, upright fronds grow to around 4 metres in length, forming a dramatic cup-like crown. The trunk, stipes, and unfurling fronds are densely covered in soft, golden-brown furry scales, giving it a unique texture and ornamental quality. Valued by collectors for both its rarity and striking appearance, Cyathea felina makes a standout feature in any exotic garden or collection.
In the UK, this species is very tender and should be kept frost-free. It will not tolerate freezing temperatures and should be protected or brought under cover when conditions drop below 5°C.
Care:
Grow in rich, moisture-retentive soil with plenty of organic matter. Keep the crown and roots consistently moist, watering directly into the crown during active growth. Provide partial shade with shelter from strong winds to protect the fronds. During winter, move container-grown plants into a greenhouse or conservatory, or wrap outdoor specimens with fleece and mulch heavily to protect the crown and roots.
Please note, these are big ferns! We endevour to fit them in the boxes undamaged but we may have to trim or bend the odd frond! This will not effect your tree fern!
