Cyathea brownii – Norfolk Tree Fern
Cyathea brownii, also known as Sphaeropteris excelsa, is one of the largest and most spectacular tree ferns in the world. Endemic to Norfolk Island in the Pacific Ocean, it can reach up to 20 metres tall in its natural habitat. Its impressive spear-shaped fronds can exceed 5 metres in length, with a distinctive dashed white line along the rachis, a hallmark of many Sphaeropteris species. The stipes and rachis are adorned with soft, cream-coloured scales, adding to its striking appearance. Known for its exceptionally fast growth rate, it makes a dramatic statement in any exotic garden.
In the UK, Cyathea brownii is tender and should be protected from frost. While mature plants may briefly tolerate light sub-zero temperatures, prolonged cold will cause damage. It is best grown in a frost-free garden, greenhouse, or conservatory where winter temperatures remain above 5°C.
Care:
Plant in a rich, moisture-retentive soil with plenty of organic matter. Keep the crown and roots consistently moist, watering directly into the crown throughout the growing season. Position in a bright, sheltered spot with protection from harsh midday sun and strong winds. During winter, wrap the crown in fleece or move container-grown plants under cover to ensure safe overwintering.
Please note, these are big ferns! We endevour to fit them in the boxes undamaged but we may have to trim or bend the odd frond! This will not effect your tree fern!
