Cyathea atrox
Cyathea atrox is a rare and impressive species of tree fern native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and the Pacific region. In its natural environment, it grows along shaded forest edges and humid valleys, where it thrives in consistently warm, moist conditions. This species is admired for its bold, upright growth and the striking presence it brings to exotic planting schemes.

Mature plants can reach over 10 metres in height, forming a tall, straight trunk topped with a broad crown of finely divided fronds. The stipes are cloaked with coarse, dark brown to black scales, creating a dramatic contrast against the fresh green fronds. Its combination of architectural form and rarity makes it a prized specimen for serious collectors and tropical gardeners.

In the UK, Cyathea atrox is very tender and must be kept completely frost-free. It will need to be grown in a conservatory, greenhouse, or very sheltered courtyard where winter temperatures remain above 5°C.

Care:
Plant in a rich, moisture-retentive soil with plenty of organic matter. Keep both the crown and roots consistently moist, watering directly into the crown during active growth. Provide bright, filtered light with some protection from harsh midday sun. Shelter from strong winds to prevent damage to the fronds, and overwinter container-grown plants indoors or in a heated greenhouse to ensure survival.

Please note, these are big ferns! We endevour to fit them in the boxes undamaged but we may have to trim or bend the odd frond! This will not effect your tree fern!
