A Rare, Fast-Growing Hybrid for the Exotic Garden

If you are looking to add an instant tropical canopy to your space without waiting decades for it to mature, the Cyathea 'Aussie Larrikin' is an exceptional choice. Sourced specifically for growers seeking rare and hard-to-find exotics, this highly sought-after horticultural hybrid is a cross between the towering Cyathea brownii (Norfolk Island Tree Fern) and the classic Cyathea cooperi.

The result is a vigorous, fast-growing tree fern that captures the majestic, lacy fronds of its giant parents but stays within a much more manageable, garden-friendly footprint.

Currently established in 12cm pots, these young ferns are at the perfect stage of development. They are fully rooted, actively pushing fresh growth, and ready to be potted on to explode in size over the summer season.

Key Features:

  • Vibrant Foliage: Produces exceptionally deeply divided, lacy fronds that unfurl in a striking, vibrant lime-green.

  • Adaptable Light Requirements: While mature 'Aussie Larrikin' ferns are famous for being highly sun-tolerant, these young plants should be kept in dappled or partial shade while they establish. As the trunk develops and sizes up over the coming years, it can be transitioned to handle much more direct sunlight than a standard tree fern.

  • Compact Vigor: It grows incredibly fast, but the ultimate trunk height maxes out at an ideal 2 to 4 meters, making it perfect for smaller gardens, architectural focal points, or large patio planters.

  • Slender Profile: Develops a clean, slender trunk covered in attractive, sandy-brown scales.

Care & Cultivation in the UK:

As a warm-temperate hybrid, this fern is a fast summer grower but requires dedicated winter care in the UK.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Never allow the compost in these 12cm pots to completely dry out. Feed with a liquid seaweed or nitrogen-rich fertilizer every two weeks in spring and summer to maximize frond size.

  • Hardiness: Rated to approximately -2°C. It should be treated as a half-hardy specimen.

  • Winter Protection: For most of the UK, we highly recommend growing this in a large container so it can be moved into a frost-free glasshouse, conservatory, or polytunnel from late October to March. If planted out in the mildest coastal microclimates once mature, the crown and trunk will require heavy fleece wrapping during cold snaps.

Supplied as: 1 x established young plant in a 12cm nursery pot, ready to be potted on and pushed for rapid summer growth.
