If you are looking for a flowering shrub that stops people in their tracks, Caesalpinia gilliesii is exactly what you need. Often called the Yellow Bird of Paradise, this spectacular South American native produces breathtaking clusters of pale yellow flowers, but the real showstoppers are the incredibly long, brilliantly contrasting bright red stamens that erupt from the center of each bloom.

Even before the late summer flowers appear, it earns its keep. The finely cut, feathery, bipinnate foliage looks almost like a delicate mimosa or fern, adding an immediate soft, architectural texture to any exotic planting scheme.

Growing & Overwintering While it looks incredibly delicate and tropical, Caesalpinia gilliesii is remarkably tough if you respect its two golden rules: it needs heat, and it absolutely demands sharp drainage.

To get the best out of this plant in the UK, position it in the hottest, most sheltered spot you have — ideally baked against a south or west-facing brick wall. It will tolerate winter cold (often down to -5°C or lower) provided its roots are kept relatively dry. Heavy, wet winter soil is fatal. Dig plenty of grit or horticultural sand into the planting hole to ensure water drains away instantly.

Quick Care Guide

  • Light: Full sun. The hotter and brighter, the better for encouraging a strong floral display.

  • Water: Drought-tolerant once established. Water moderately during the summer growing season, but ensure it is kept as dry as possible throughout the winter.

  • Soil: Poor to moderately fertile, very sharply drained soil. Add generous amounts of grit if planting in heavier ground.

  • Hardiness: Borderline hardy (H4). Mature plants can handle typical UK frosts if the soil is dry, but young plants will benefit from a protective layer of horticultural fleece during severe cold snaps.
