Alpinia luteocarpa 'Red Rubin' is an absolute standout for foliage lovers. Grown for its sleek, bamboo-like upright canes and deep olive-green leaves, its real showstopper is the vibrant, velvety burgundy-red coloring on the underside of every leaf. When light catches the foliage indoors or breeze ruffles it outside, the flash of rich crimson provides incredible depth and contrast.

Securing 'Red Rubin' as an autumn plug is the smartest way to add this sought-after ginger to your collection. Pot it on immediately, enjoy it as a gorgeous, color-rich houseplant on an indoor windowsill throughout autumn and winter, and hit spring with a fully established root system ready to surge into growth.

Why Start with a Winter Plug?

  • Spring Head Start: Skip the wait for late-spring nursery imports. Your plug will spend winter building a dense, active root system, giving you explosive growth come May.

  • Winter Windowsill Color: The bold burgundy undersides bring vibrant, warm tropical color into your home through the dark winter months.

  • Exceptional Value: Secure rare ginger genetics at a fraction of the price of mature, potted summer stock.

Plant Details & Sizing

  • Format: Healthy plug plant with established starter root network

  • Type: Evergreen architectural ginger / rhizomatous perennial

  • Eventual Garden Height: 1m – 1.5m

  • Eventual Spread: 60cm – 90cm

  • Foliage: Lance-shaped, glossy deep green leaves backed with rich, velvety ruby-purple/red undersides

  • Hardiness: Tender/semi-hardy. Tolerates temperatures down to around 0°C to -2°C at the rhizome if kept on the dry side, but best overwintered indoors frost-free to keep the foliage evergreen and spotless.

Winter Care & Growing-On Guide

  • Potting Up: Upon arrival, pot your plug into a 9cm or 1-litre pot using a fertile, moisture-retentive but free-draining compost (peat-free multi-purpose with added perlite or bark).

  • Light: Place in bright, indirect light on an indoor windowsill or inside a frost-free greenhouse. Avoid harsh scorching direct midday sun, but give plenty of bright light to intensify that rich red pigmentation.

  • Watering: Keep the compost lightly moist. Reduce watering during the coldest winter weeks, allowing the top inch of compost to dry slightly before watering again. Never let it sit in standing water.

  • Spring Planting: In late spring (late May/early June), once all risk of frost has passed, display outdoors in a warm, sheltered patio container or semi-shaded exotic border. Thrives in dappled shade with regular water and a high-nitrogen feed through midsummer.
