Jungle in a Box
Alocasia ‘Mayan Mask’
Alocasia ‘Mayan Mask’
A Striking, Broad-Leaved Tropical for Instant Architectural Impact
If you want to create an immediate jungle atmosphere on a sheltered patio or in a bright conservatory, this established Alocasia 'Mayan Mask' delivers massive tropical impact straight out of the box. Known for its enormous, architectural "elephant ear" leaves, this highly sought-after variety is prized by exotic growers for its spectacular two-tone colouration and robust, upright growth habit.
Supplied as substantial, well-rooted specimens in large 4-litre pots, these plants have already bypassed the starter phase. They are pushing large, structural foliage and are ready to be dropped straight into a decorative display pot to anchor your tropical planting scheme this summer.
Key Features:
-
Two-Tone Foliage: Produces huge, glossy, prominently veined green leaves on the upper surface, beautifully contrasted by striking, deep maroon-purple undersides.
-
Massive Proportions: A highly vigorous grower. Because these are already established in 4-litre pots, they have the root mass to size up incredibly fast this season. When fed and watered heavily, they can reach up to 2 metres tall, with individual leaves easily spanning 60cm or more across.
-
Architectural Statement: Features strong, sturdy stems that keep the massive leaves held upright, making it an incredible structural focal point for a tropical border setting or a large indoor display.
Care & Cultivation in the UK:
As a true tropical, this Alocasia is a fast summer grower but requires strict winter care in the UK climate.
-
Light Requirements: Performs best in bright, indirect sunlight or partial dappled shade. Avoid direct, scorching midday sun, which can burn the large foliage, especially if grown under glass.
-
Watering & Feeding: These are hungry, thirsty plants during the growing season. Keep the compost consistently moist but well-drained—never allow the roots to sit in stagnant water. Feed with a nitrogen-rich liquid fertiliser every week or two from spring to late summer to fuel continuous leaf production.
-
Hardiness & Winter Protection: This plant is completely tender. It will not survive a UK winter outdoors. It is best grown in a large, heavy display pot so it can be enjoyed on a patio during the warm summer months and then moved indoors to a conservatory, heated glasshouse, or bright windowsill before night temperatures drop below 10°C in autumn.
-
Overwintering: During winter, dial the watering right back, allowing the top couple of inches of soil to dry out before watering again, as it will naturally slow down or enter a semi-dormant resting phase.
Supplied as: 1 x large, established specimen in a 4-litre nursery pot, ready to provide instant structural impact.
